Romero Law, APC is again please to announce that lead trial attorney Alan J. Romero has been recognized by his peers for exceptional lawyering in SuperLawyers Magazine’s 2019 Southern California edition.
Mr. Romero was the subject of an extended profile on Page 112, as seen below:
Romero Law, APC is proud to announce that Southwestern Law School has selected Alan J. Romero as a Director-at-Large of its Alumni Board of Directors. Mr. Romero, a member of the Class of 2006, was a graduate of Southwestern’s SCALE Program, the only 2-year ABA-accredited JD of its kind. Mr. Romero looks forward to the opportunity to give back to Southwestern, a law school that provided substantial financial and academic opportunities to his much younger self, when law school very much seemed outside the realm of possibilities on a number of levels. Alas, times change, as do circumstances, and Mr. Romero is grateful for the opportunity to pay it forward.
Alan J. Romero of Romero Law, APC has co-counseled with John A. Girardi of Girardi & Keese to prosecute a wrongful death action against 24 Fitness USA, Inc. and a related entity.
The complaint, filed in the Superior Court for the County of Riverside, alleges that 24 Fitness failed to comply with applicable California law requiring the existence and proper maintenance of AED (Automated External Defibrillator) devices in health clubs, with adequately-trained staff on-hand.
As described in the complaint, Estiban Mejia was a 24 year old married man who experienced a cardiac event in the Riverside 24 Fitness location and later expired, leaving behind a young widow and two infants. Representing the estate of the decedent, along with his widow and two young children, Romero Law, APC and Girardi & Keese allege, by and through the complaint, that 24 Fitness negligently failed to rescue the Mr. Mejia due to avoidable negligence on the part of the health club.
As 24 Hour Fitness was involved in another near-fatal failure to rescue a club patron with an AED device at another location, there is reason to believe that there exists the likelihood of substantial harm to individuals or the public interest as a result of these alleged violations of California Health & Safety Code § 104113. Any member of the public with knowledge or evidence of similar alleged violations pertaining to AED devices at such a health studio are advised to consult with this office.
The case is entitled Sandy Hernandez, et al. v. 24 Hour Fitness USA, Inc., et al., Riverside County Superior Court Case No. RIC1507931.

Mr. Romero looks forward to this appointment being maximally utilized to leverage his extensive experience in student mentorship and outreach to continue, and best, serve Cal State LA, it’s students, faculty, administrators, and students, present, past and future.
Alan J. Romero of Romero Law, APC along with co-counsel Stephen Calvacca of NeJame Law and W. Edward McLeod of W. Edward McLeod, P.A. have initiated arbitration proceedings against Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions, Inc. on behalf of Possibility Pictures II, LLC, the producers of the motion picture To Write Love on Her Arms.
On November 24, 2014, Sony suffered a massive cyberattack and intrusion by an as-yet-identified hacking consortium identifying themselves as the Guardians of Peace, possibly acting at the behest of the North Korean government. During the course of this cyber intrusion, the Guardians of Peace obtained digital master copies of five feature-length films, including To Write Love on Her Arms, and released these digital master copies onto various file-sharing networks with the purpose of causing economic harm to Sony, and by extension, the stakeholders of the pirated films.
As alleged in the Statement of Claim, Sony failed to take reasonable, industry-standard efforts to mitigate or prevent numerous long-term and persistent cyber intrusions into Sony’s internal computer networks; these cyber intrusions being so pervasive that the hackers were able to produce their own Sony-validated digital certificates which provided the intruders with unfettered administrator-level access to Sony’s internal computer networks. These stolen Sony digital certificates were then used in malware attacks on third party targets in the wake of the 2014 Sony network hijacking.
Possibility Pictures II, LLC are the producers of the film To Write Love on Her Arms, which they licensed to Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions, Inc. After the theft of the master digital copy of the film, and its worldwide distribution via piracy-related distribution platforms, it is alleged that Sony reneged on its agreement to distribute the film, as the motion picture had already been illegally downloaded at least 19,949 times during the first six days after its unauthorized release, leading to an exponential spidering effect, as the digital master copy of the film continues to make its way to illegal downloaders all over the world.
Sony, by and through its attorneys, denies any liability related to this action. Instead, Sony asserts that it was under zero obligation to provide any anti-piracy or security measures in relation to its storage and safekeeping of the film.
